Consider moving a bedroom to the same level by turning a room like an office into a bedroom. In order to give my parents as much privacy as possible, we converted the dining room on the main floor into a spare bedroom so that the entire lower level suite is theirs.
Purchase bed risers , if needed. I got these ones as they are very well rated, and very "adjustable" for different height needs.
I found a lot are only held in place by the mattress itself which I didn't personally find sturdy enough as they can double as a stand assist if needed. I got this one and it is working very well
for extra comfort, particularly if your senior spends a lot of time in bed!
Memory foam mattress toppers can be a real life saver as well - no one wants to deal with skin breakdown or bedsores! I got this one:.
At the time, I choose this one because there was a $30.00 coupon, but I am really happy with it! The removable, washable cover is awesome and I am told it is VERY comfortable.
Mom also has some incontinence issues. Yes, she could wear incontinence undies or pads all the time, but those parts need some time to breath too. I much prefer these:
They are soft, washable, don't crinkle every time she moves AND they protect that expensive memory foam topper!
Ensure the bedroom is well-lit. Install a light switch near the bed. No you don't need to pull wire or cut open a wall...
Hubby has a good understanding of electrical, so for us these were very easy to install and have been great so far (when mom remembers there is a switch next to the bed!)
Or use a touch activated bedside lamp like these:
I got these particular ones for 2 reasons: The phones can be right beside the bed charging in case they are needed AND they have a sturdy square base - not as easy to knock over when slightly disoriented in the middle of the night! So far, the only down side is I didn't realized they were a soft touch switch, not touch anywhere activation.
With mom's memory problems and to make it even easier at night, I installed motion sensor lights under the bed.
with over 2,000 reviews on Amazon and average rating of 4.5 stars - I took a chance on them but so far have been very happy. Happy enough that I bought another 3 sets to do the stairs!
Avoid throw rugs! Mom (and seniors in general) tends to shuffle... after the first fall getting tangled in the throw rug - it was a thrown OUT rug!
Secure furniture to the wall to prevent tipping. Ensure frequently used items are within easy reach from the bed.
Phone and Alert System: Keep a phone or an emergency alert system near the bed for easy access in case of emergencies. Add the security alarm’s panic button on the dresser or the bed frame.
Easy-to-Use Storage: Consider adjustable rods and shelves in the closet for easy access to clothing. Install automatic lights in closets for easy visibility - the motion activated lights above would work well for this.
Easy-to-Use Thermostat: Ensure the thermostat is easily accessible from the bedroom to control the room’s temperature.
Easy-to-Open Windows: Ensure windows are easy to open for fresh air and emergency exits.
